MALI TODAY,  NIGERIA TOMORROW? LESSONS FROM TODAY'S MALI TERRORIST ATTACK

Today, April 25th, 2026, Mali experienced one of its largest coordinated terrorist assaults in years, with simultaneous attacks across multiple cities including: Bamako (capital), Kati (main military base), Gao, Kidal, Mopti and Sévaré, The Malian army described the attackers as “armed terrorist groups” targeting key military and strategic locations.

Terrorist took over Governor’s House, In the northern city of Kidal, fighters linked to the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) reportedly: Entered and took control of parts of the city. Moved into the residence of the regional governor.

Reports indicate that the governor fled and took refuge in a former UN (MINUSMA) camp, Militants were seen inside government buildings and neighborhoods

Two main groups are suspected to have worked together; Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), An Al-Qaeda-linked jihadist group, one of the most powerful militant organizations in West Africa and Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), a Tuareg separatist group seeking independence or autonomy for northern Mali.

Analysts say this cooperation is dangerous and rare, similar to the alliance that triggered the 2012 Mali crisis. Explosions and heavy gunfire across cities; Military barracks, Airports, Government facilities. A military helicopter was reportedly shot down.

The home of the Defence Minister was also targeted and destroyed (he survived)

Residents in Panic as Armed fighters moving freely in vehicles, Cities temporarily falling out of government control; Kidal: Largely claimed under rebel control, Gao: Parts reportedly seized, militants were seen controlling key neighborhoods and infrastructure

However, the Malian army later said it had regained control of major areas, though fighting continued.
