Femi Fani-Kayode has warned Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso not to trust Peter Obi over reports of a proposed one-term presidential arrangement ahead of the 2027 elections. The statement was made on Sunday amid growing political realignments involving opposition figures in Nigeria.
According to reports, Fani-Kayode alleged that Obi could eventually sideline Kwankwaso after securing political advantage. He reportedly described the arrangement as politically risky for Kwankwaso and claimed Obi would “dribble” him and later “drop him like a hot potato.”
The issue is linked to ongoing coalition talks among opposition politicians preparing for the 2027 presidential election. Recently, there have been reports of internal disagreements within the opposition alliance previously linked with the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Reuters reported that both Obi and Kwankwaso distanced themselves from the alliance because of internal disputes, mistrust, and legal battles.
Following those disagreements, discussions reportedly emerged about a new political platform called the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), where Obi and Kwankwaso were allegedly exploring cooperation ahead of 2027. One of the speculations circulating in political circles is that Obi may agree to serve only one term if elected president, allowing power to rotate afterward. That alleged arrangement is what Fani-Kayode reacted to.
Fani-Kayode’s argument appears to be based on three major points;
Distrust of political agreements, he implied that written or verbal political agreements in Nigeria are often abandoned once power is secured
Fear of Kwankwaso being politically weakened, he suggested that Kwankwaso could lose his political bargaining power if he accepts a subordinate role based on promises that may not be fulfilled later.
Regional power politics, the controversy also reflects Nigeria’s sensitive North-South power rotation debate. Kwankwaso has strong northern political influence, while Obi’s support base is strongest in the South-East and among many urban youths nationwide.
The statement is important because both Obi and Kwankwaso were major opposition figures in the 2023 election. Political analysts believe that if they unite under one platform, they could become a serious challenge to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027. However, disagreements over who should lead any coalition have continued to create tension within the opposition camp.
This statement has already generated debate online. They dismissed Fani-Kayode’s remarks as an attempt to create division within the opposition.
Some northern political commentators argue Kwankwaso should be cautious about any agreement that may reduce his influence.
Others believe opposition unity may fail again because of personal ambitions and mistrust among leaders.
At the moment, there is no official confirmation from Obi or Kwankwaso publicly accepting or rejecting any formal one-term agreement. Much of the discussion is still based on political negotiations and media speculation.
