FUBARA DEFECTS TO NDC

FUBARA DEFECTS TO NDC

There is currently widespread confusion online about reports claiming that Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has defected to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

From available reports, there is no verified evidence that Governor Siminalayi Fubara himself has officially decamped to the NDC.

What actually happened is that a political figure named Blessing Fubara Snr., a community development expert and political stakeholder — announced that he left the APC for the NDC in Abuja. Multiple blogs and social media users shortened the name to “Fubara,” creating the impression that Governor Sim Fubara had defected.

The reports state that Blessing Fubara Snr. was received by former Bayelsa governor Seriake Dickson and other NDC stakeholders during the declaration. He reportedly described the NDC as “a moving train” and said Rivers people were preparing to “take back the state” in 2027.

A major reason the rumour spread quickly is because Rivers politics is already extremely tense due to the long-running power struggle between: Governor Siminalayi Fubara and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.

Because of this crisis, many Nigerians already expect possible political realignments before 2027, so people easily believed the story.

Another factor fueling the speculation is that there have been persistent rumours about Fubara’s political future after his fallout with Wike and the internal crisis in Rivers PDP structures.

Some reports even suggest Fubara’s allies are quietly building alternative political structures ahead of 2027. One recent report claimed the governor had begun endorsing legislative aspirants to strengthen his political control in Rivers State after months of political battles.

However, as of now, Governor Fubara has not publicly announced joining the NDC. There is no official statement from the Rivers State Government confirming such defection. No major national party has formally received him into the NDC.

Most viral reports are actually referring to Blessing Fubara Snr., not Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Politically, though, analysts believe the rumours reveal something important:

Why did the story gain attention so fast, Many opposition politicians reportedly want Fubara in any anti-Wike or anti-Tinubu coalition because:

Rivers State is politically strategic. Fubara still controls significant grassroots sympathy.

His conflict with Wike transformed him into a symbolic resistance figure for many Rivers residents.

Opposition blocs are currently searching for influential governors and political structures ahead of 2027.

There is also growing speculation that emerging parties like the NDC may try to attract dissatisfied politicians from: APC, PDP, ADC coalition blocs.

Some online supporters even linked the alleged move to possible support for:

Peter Obi

Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso

But again, those claims remain speculative and largely driven by social media discussions rather than official declarations.
